Graffiti

Graffiti (singular: graffito) is writing or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place.

Modern graffiti has many different purposes from gang affiliations, territorial wars, self expression, political awareness, advertising, and so much more. Why is it illegal if it's the oldest art form we have documented? Why do people's mark on the world get white washed by a higher power? Just because you don't get something doesn't mean it's wrong.

Contract

For my BFA Thesis, I want to explore the ideas of identity as it applies to alternative and street art. I want to build a fake brick wall and install it in my space and then create and 3D animation to project onto it. The animation will not so much follow a narrative but be a passive animation showing individuals throwing up their art on the wall and then turning to reveal who they are and then leave frame. Having many characters interact with the wall and periodically have a form of law enforcement come and paint over it or wash it away. Conceptually I want it to be about individual’s identities and how they express themselves. Depending on how the projector works on a brick wall I may paint it over in white like someone was trying to cover it. I want to animate in a 3D environment but render it more cartoon style because I think it will read better on the wall.

For production I will take reference footage with my Canon Rebel T3i. I will then use maya to animate. I’m still debating if I want to use premade open source characters and rigs or if I should build my own. I would love to build my own. But I will then build a faux brick wall.
